Somos Familia builds leadership in our Latinx families and communities to create a culture where people of diverse genders and sexual orientations can thrive.
About This Cause
Families with LGBTQ children in the Latinx community often feel isolated and lack information and resources to help them understand and support their children. As a result, risk of suicide goes up and chances of being happy and healthy go down. Our solution is in our community and families. Somos Familia is a group of families and volunteers who come together to overcome fear and build the understanding and courage needed to provide safe, accepting environments for LGBTQ youth. Our intergenerational teams of leaders organize events, provide workshops and conduct community dialogues that break through a culture of silence and create families, communities, and schools where all children can thrive. We provide a spectrum of support from 1-on-1 peer coaching around acceptance to group events to community events to educational , leadership and advocacy opportunities.
