Mission Statement
Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) is a high impact nonprofit organization that focuses on mobilizing our network of 125,000+ legal advocates in advocacy campaigns and pro bono programs to address legal needs for communities in crisis while promoting systemic change. We advance equity through legal assistance projects that benefit those who have been denied their civil and human rights, such as immigrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, low-income communities of color, and communities harmed by environmental racism and climate change.
About This Cause
The U.S. political and legal system often protects the powerful and not those who have been historically excluded from resources and environmental equity, such as Black, Native American, Hispanic/Latino, and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) populations. Throughout history, such populations have been subject to discriminatory laws and policies that promote racial disparities, socioeconomic disparities, health disparities and more. Moreover, low-income and disadvantaged communities make up a disproportionately high percentage of those with unmet legal needs. For many of these communities, access to free, high quality legal services can be vital to their economic and social well-being. At times, such assistance can even be the difference between life and death. L4GG specializes in designing, launching, scaling, and managing rapid and effective pro bono programs to both address root causes of inequity and mitigate the harms of currently unjust policies. Since our inception, we have partnered with hundreds of law firms and nonprofit organizations across the country to fight for justice under a variety of programs, including: Project Corazon - We defend the rights of families impacted by inhumane immigration policies, providing legal assistance to asylum seekers, with a particular focus on assisting the most vulnerable asylum seekers, including those with medical or psychological conditions, those with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and third-language speakers. In 2023, more than 39,000 individuals received our free legal guidance on asylum through live, online trainings, and 578 asylum seekers received direct legal assistance. Reproductive Health Legal Assistance Project (RHLAP) - After the fall of Roe v. Wade, L4GG launched the RHLAP to track the current state of reproductive health law in all 56 states and territories. Powered by more than 600 pro bono attorneys from 50 top law firms around the country, this legal research became the backbone for the Policy Resource Hub for Reproductive Health, a publicly-available database including legal guidance on reproductive healthcare, a biweekly newsletter of high-level changes, and a curated media coverage database showing how enforcement of the law looks in real life. Climate Change and Environmental Justice- To enhance the impact of federal investments in climate resilience, L4GG’s Climate Change and Environmental Justice (CCEJ) team launched the Decarbonization and Climate Resiliency Funding Clinic (Clinic) last year. This year, our free federal funding webinars were attended by 600+ representatives from across 49 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, and Guam. These participants came from 72 state agencies, 177 cities/counties/municipal government entities, and 231 non-profit organizations. Through these sessions, we provided necessary guidance to attendees on funding eligibility, application processes, timelines, acceptable projects, and more under federal legislation. Our CCEJ team has also been battling environmental racism, exemplified through our multi-faceted efforts for climate equity. A key resource released this year was the update of our groundbreaking Disadvantaged Communities Report (DAC Report), which provides crucial legal definitions and policy information to aid communities and advocates in implementing climate resiliency projects. State Legislative Advocacy Academy (SLAA) - L4GG's SLAA is a custom educational program that trains lawyers to independently fight for change in their communities by advocating for positive policy changes at the state-level. Now in its second year, SLAA has equipped 475 attorneys with in-depth advocacy training that covers the intricacies of legislative advocacy.
