Mission Statement

The majority of rural patients first access primary health care at chemist shops; Maisha Meds builds technology to support this largely ignored sector and the patients they serve. Our technology includes a point of sale system that tracks and reports on medication sales; targeted health tips and telemedicine referrals that use algorithms to tailor content and encourage medication safe use and adherence; and forecasting and reordering capabilities that leverage supplier credit to encourage pharmacies to order more intelligently from high-quality suppliers.

About This Cause

The Maisha Meds system leverages software, data, and analytics to address challenges faced by rural pharmacies and their patients via: (1) Point-of-sale software (POS) Our Android system was designed with Kenyan chemists to include a simple sales flow, payment tracking, and financial reporting. This tool has unlocked record-keeping for pharmacies previously reliant on paper books and intuition, and allows users to easily understand their profitability and margin. It is free on the Google Play Store, works online and offline, and syncs periodically with a cloud-based server. (2) Patient follow-up Sales conducted through our software capture patients’ mobile numbers. Using these details, we are able to send targeted health messaging to patients regarding the medication they purchased and, if desired, follow-on services. To do this, we have partnered with a telemedicine provider to counsel patients that purchase potentially deadly medications or are seeking clinical advice. We are building one of the largest datasets of rural prescribing behavior in Africa (with over 600,000 products sold via the system in 2017 alone). This detailed and actionable information will be the foundation to providing improved care. We have seen that the medications sold in our pharmacies are primarily antimalarials and antibiotics and are almost always prescribed without clinical oversight or a diagnostic test. As antibiotic resistance driven by inappropriate use and non-adherence takes hold in this region, we believe our system’s testing and adherence-focused messages and clinical calls has the potential to change how sick patients seek care in the region. (3) Intelligent supplier reordering with integrated financing Pharmacies commonly reorder drugs based on cash flow or stock-outs. As a result, medication prices in shops increase, driven by more frequent orders placed from nearby wholesalers rather than strategic orders based on price and quality. Our system works to address this issue by using data captured in the POS to forecast future shop demand. Our system will pair smart decision making with a simple reordering system that directly connects to high-quality suppliers in Kenya. And the data generated by the POS will be used to provide credit scoring for a credit product offered by a financing partner. As a result, our system will allow pharmacies to order more intelligently and from better suppliers in quantities that optimize prices.
