Mission Statement
The mission of the African Middle Eastern Leadership Project (AMEL) is to mobilize, empower, and unite young leaders and activists from the Middle East and Africa (MEA) to build resilient, inclusive societies that are free from discrimination, persecution, and violent coercion, and to advocate for policies in support of these goals.
About This Cause
To achieve its mission, AMEL empowers and connects young activists from the Middle East and Africa with one another, as well as with peers and policymakers in the Global North, in order to strategically impact the human rights and democracy landscapes today and tomorrow. Through online networking, training and mentoring, diverse young activists build the skills, experience and connections needed to be highly effective leaders for human rights and democracy. AMEL was co-created by a multicultural and multifaith group of young professionals, and was intentionally structured to be led by an activist with lived experiences similar to those whom the organization was designed to serve. Founding President Mohamed Abubakr, a human rights activist from Sudan who relocated to the US in 2016, leads AMEL, which is headquartered in Washington, DC.
