About This Cause
Aleph conducts media activities mostly targeting Ethiopians, and Ethiopian diaspora population. Aleph focuses in providing exposure to a wholistic Ethiopian life and culture through its media activities, primarily using its satellite television channel as the cultural voice of every community, showcasing the rich cultural life, and empowering communities through its educational media activities. Ethiopia is the second most populous country in Africa with over 100 million population, of which over 63% are under 25 years old (The World Factbook, CIA, USA, 2018). There is also a growing Ethiopian population in the diaspora, with over 250,000 people residing in the United States alone (Migration Policy Institute, 2014). Ethiopians, Ethiopian immigrants, and generations of Ethiopian immigrants have substantial lack of access to social, civic, and educational information. Satellite television has become very popular in Ethiopia due to lack of choice in the Ethiopian Television industry. Aleph envisions to disseminate, or establish various platforms to disseminate social, civic, and educational information targeting this large, diverse, and vibrant population. To accomplish its goal, Aleph leased 24-hour satellite television channel since September 2017. The channel currently broadcasts children’s education, documentary, and entertainment programs in Ethiopia, which are produced by different programmers. Aleph also disseminates these programs using various social media platforms, including Facebook and YouTube. Aleph will also explore venues to broadcast its television programs to other countries that its target population lives. These programs are designed and expected to enrich sociocultural, and economic knowledge and awareness of the population and will contribute to the development of a more peaceful, educated, prosperous, and diverse society.
