About This Cause

Babies of Homelessness delivers basic necessities like diapers, baby wipes, and formula to low-income families facing homelessness throughout King and Snohomish County. By providing these essential basic needs, we help to stabilize and improve the health and well-being of the families we serve. Notably absent from discussions about ending homelessness is an essential staple for the health of children: diapers. Diaper need is a hidden and silent crisis. According to the National Diaper Bank Network, an estimated 1 in 3 families struggles to provide enough diapers to keep a child clean, dry, and healthy. Imagine you are a mother or father living in a cramped car with your children and you are down to your last diaper. You are dreading how long you need to make that single diaper last. For many families experiencing homelessness, the either/or choice between putting gas in the car to get to work or purchasing another box of diapers is all too real. Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards — formerly known as food stamps — can’t be used to buy diapers, even though they are crucial to a baby’s health. The majority of early child care programs require an adequate supply of diapers for attendance but do not provide diapers to families in need. And babies go through a lot of diapers costing $80 to 100 a month. As a result, parents are stretching the time between diaper changes or repurposing diapers where babies sit in wet and soiled diapers for days. Providing basic needs services prove a tangible way of reducing parental stress and improving child health and development, allowing parents to focus on long-term needs and breaking the cycle of homelessness. Who We Serve: Babies of Homelessness serves single mothers, single fathers, pregnant mothers, families experiencing homelessness, families in low-income housing, and families in marginalized, rural, and underserved communities. By delivering directly to families where they are (whether in a tent, car, shelter, or low-income housing), we reach “invisible” families facing accessibility barriers. We identify and specifically partner with small community-based agencies from rural, marginalized, and low-income communities that are disconnected from resources, capital, and investment. The agencies we serve have expressed a need for diapers, and relayed they have not had a diaper supplier ever. As the demand for basic needs skyrockets, fueled by rising homelessness, the pandemic, and the economic crisis, Babies of Homelessness has swiftly mobilized and expanded our capacity to meet the escalating demand for our services. In 2022, we distributed 441,465 diapers and doubled our reach to serve 10,036 children in need of diapers. We delivered our one-millionth diaper as an organization in December of 2022. We anticipate distributing more than 600,000 diapers in 2023 to meet the increasing demand for diaper support. How We Distribute Basics: Direct Service: Families facing homelessness call our intake line and order diapers, wipes, and formula in preferred sizes and brands. Our outreach staff drives to the family where they are – whether in their car, tent cities, encampments, tiny homes, motels, shelters, RVs, or couch surfing – and delivers the order within 72 hours. We provide the service without wait lists, extensive interview processes, or red tape. Partner Network: Through our partner network, we deliver bulk quantities of diapers, wipes, and formula monthly to 20 agencies throughout King and Snohomish Counties. Each month, case managers at our partner agencies submit orders for diapers, wipes, and formula in requested sizes and brands using a user-friendly online form. Our paid full-time operations manager pulls inventory from the warehouse, loads the van, and drops bulk inventory quantities off to each partner agency. Case managers then distribute inventory to their clients. Our easy ordering process, bulk quantity, and direct delivery allow case managers to focus on delivering top-notch wrap-around case management without worrying about how to procure diapers, submit long weekly orders, or pick up diapers. Mobile Pickup Service: Once a month, families call our intake line to place their order and can pick up a box of diapers, a package of wipes, and a can of formula at one of four convenient buss-accessible locations in Seattle, Bellevue, Kent, or Everett.
