Mission Statement
Relying on the Freedom of Information Act and other public records laws, American Oversight exposes unethical conduct throughout federal, state, and local government and demands investigations into conflicts that undermine effective governance. We file open records requests and sue agencies to uncover misconduct that otherwise would not see daylight and harness the independent power of the courts to force government officials to obey the law.
About This Cause
American Oversight is a non-partisan, nonprofit ethics watchdog and is the top Freedom of Information Act litigator investigating the Trump administration. Since our launch in March 2017, we have used public records requests and litigation to uncover and publish, tens of thousands of documents including senior officials’ calendars, emails, and expense records. Our State Accountability Project, is investigating voter suppression and other threats to democracy across the country, including targeted investigations in Florida, Georgia, Texas, Wisconsin and more. Relying on FOIA and other public records laws, we file requests to uncover misconduct that is otherwise obstructed by corrupt interests or partisan politics, and we are prepared, when necessary, to aggressively litigate our requests to get documents into the hand of journalists, advocacy groups, and the public.
