Mission Statement

Transforming lives behind and beyond the prison walls.

About This Cause

Thrive For Life works to transform lives both behind and beyond the prison walls. Behind the walls, we offer meditative resources for an Examined Life to our incarcerated brothers and sisters in correctional facilities throughout New York and New Jersey. Beyond the walls, we operate houses of studies that offer a continuity of care to returning citizens committed to continuing the good work of education. Our work is focused on four key areas: ● Housing ● Education ● Employment ● Purpose HOUSING: In 2019, Thrive For Life opened the Ignacio House of Studies in the Bronx—our first supportive residential community for incarcerated people who are continuing the work of college education they began while incarcerated. Ignacio House eliminates the most common re-entry barriers—homelessness, unemployment, and material poverty. With two new housing programs in New York and the acquisition of Abraham House, we now have the capacity to support more than 45 resident scholars in total. We will create a permanent housing plan for each resident upon exit from one of our houses. EDUCATION: The Journal of Experimental Criminology’s meta-analysis shows that justice involved individuals who enroll in post-secondary education programs are 48 percent less likely to recidivate, compared to the nation’s three-year recidivism rate of 70 percent. We work with a wide range of university partners the New York area: NYU, Manhattan College, Columbia University, Cornell University, Mercy College, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, St. Francis College, and City University of New York—to provide scholarships for resident scholars and refer applicants for admission to continue their education. We are expanding our definition of education to encompass a broader range of learning and skill building opportunities. The Cardinal's Cafe, our new educational facility based at Abraham House, will enable us to collaborate with partners such as, the Renaissance Technical Institute which trains individuals to work as Electricians, Plumbers, Solar Panel Installers, Carpenters, Optometrist Assistants, CDL drivers, etc. We will also offer our educational programs to justice-involved individuals who are not in our residential programs, reaching members of the broader justice-impacted community. EMPLOYMENT: In order to help individuals secure self-sustaining and meaningful work, Thrive for Life provides individualized mentorship and support, including job workforce training, resume writing, interviewing skills, clothing and transportation to provide access to job referrals and opportunities through numerous partnerships with local employers. We also offer internship placements for resident scholars through our partnerships with local businesses, nonprofits, and corporations. In addition, residents coordinate and run an active role in the operation of the food pantry at Abraham House, which serves upwards of 175 families every week in the greater South Bronx area. PURPOSE: This pillar looks at self-management, spiritual life, self-awareness, moral recognition, as well as physical and mental wellness. Among the programs used include (1) Moral Reconation Therapy, a cognitive-behavioral treatment system that leads to enhanced moral reasoning, better decision making, and more appropriate behavior, and (2) Seeking Safety, a therapeutic program for those suffering from trauma, substance abuse, and/or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Additionally, we forge bonds of relationship through our retreat programming behind the walls to accompany our incarcerated brothers and sisters as they reflect and discern a sense of purpose in their individual life, which serves as the critical springboard to long term transformation.
