Mission Statement
Increase access to high-quality, inclusive music education.
About This Cause
Established in 2013 in Richmond, VA, Music Orchard Richmond (MOR) seeks to enrich student learning experiences through high-quality, inclusive, and accessible music education both in school and after school. MOR’s program offerings grew out of a series of conversations between MOR Executive Director Elizabeth Kilpatrick and community leaders, school music teachers, and school principals. The programs are designed to meet the needs expressed through these conversations, namely the need for high-quality music education support that is inclusive and accessible to all students and that takes place in collaboration with school music programs. MOR has two main program branches; an in-school program and an after school program. The in-school program works with school music programs to provide Teaching Artists who enter the schools and give supplemental instruction. Teaching Artists are able to cover all instruments and session structure and content is designed collaboratively by the school music teacher and Teaching Artist to best meet the needs of their students. MOR provides scholarship funds to schools in need to ensure that all programs are inclusive of all demographics. While MOR’s programs are open to all schools in Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield, and Hanover counties, MOR actively seeks to create sustained partnerships with Title I schools in an effort to provide greater access to quality music education. The after school program partners with pre-existing after school programs to provide tuition-free music lessons as a component of the program offerings. Lessons occur once a week in a one-on-one format and on non-lesson days, volunteers serving as Practice Mentors work with the students to practice what they have learned. Students receive an average of 15 lessons per semester. By partnering with established after school programs, each student is able to receive homework help, a meal, and access to other enrichment activities in addition to their music lessons. MOR’s current partner with this program is the Peter Paul Development Center (PPD) which provides services to schools in the East End of Richmond. All schools served by PPD are Title I schools.
