Mission Statement
Petén Health trains and supports Community Health Workers (CHWs) in the most remote rural villages of Petén, Guatemala. By providing education, mentoring, and resources we enable community members to offer quality, affordable, culturally-sensitive health care to their neighbors.
About This Cause
We are thrilled to announce that in 2025, Petén Health will begin training a new group of dedicated Community Health Workers (CHWs) to serve the remote villages of Petén, Guatemala. These volunteers commit to a three-year program where they learn to diagnose and treat a wide range of health problems, including infectious diseases like diarrhea and pneumonia, chronic conditions such as asthma and diabetes, and emergencies like lacerations, vehicular accidents, and childbirth complications. Currently, 35 CHWs provide critical medical care to 60 villages, serving a population of 60,000. They also staff a central clinic for more complex cases, helping their neighbors avoid long, costly journeys to access care. By empowering local health workers, we are building a sustainable, culturally sensitive healthcare network that addresses urgent needs in underserved communities. Since the program’s inception in 2002, we’ve made incredible strides in training and supporting CHWs. In 2020, we proudly opened our permanent medical teaching center, La Casa de Salud, a central hub for ongoing education and care. Now, with your support, we are ready to expand and continue this vital work. Your donation will directly support the training and support of CHWs, ensuring that life-saving healthcare remains available in the region for years to come. Join us in making a lasting impact on the health of rural Guatemala!
