About This Cause

The Lewis & Clark Humane Society has been a part of the Helena area since 1964. We provide temporary housing for homeless animals while they wait for their forever home. In 2016, LCHS took in 1,509 animals of which 816 were dogs and 681 were cats. Occasionally, we will see chickens. bunnies and goats. We adopted out 678 animals and returned 518 to their homes. LCHS actively works to enrich all of our animals during their stay.Dogs participate in playgroups, walks, and interactive toys. Cats have indoor/outdoor access, lots of socialization and toys to keep them busy throughout their stay. LCHS contracts with the city of Helena and Lewis and Clark County to house animals brought in by animal control. Spay Montana is program of LCHS and helps Montana communities spay and neuter through low cost clinics. This program has had a significant impact throughout the state on pet overpopulation. Spay Montana is now working with the Indian reservations in Montana to hep reduce their homeless animals. LCHS provides education and volunteer opportunities within the shelter as well as to the local schools. We also provide cremation services for after life care for pets in our community. These services help support the continued nonprofit work of LCHS.
