Mission Statement
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.
About This Cause
Girl Scouts of Silver Sage Council is a girl-led youth organization that serves more than 4,000 K-12 girls throughout southern Idaho. The council, along with a team of 2,300 local volunteers, delivers educational leadership programs that help girls reach their potential in many aspects of life. Girl Scout programs promote critical thinking, problem-solving skills and applied learning through an inquiry-based learning environment that helps girls explore passions and develop new interests. Programs are available year-round including after-school and weekends, and scholarships are easily accessible to those who require financial assistance. The Girl Scouts of Silver Sage Outdoor Program provides opportunities for girls to get away from devices and into the great Idaho outdoors. The program features fun, interactive outdoor activities that encourage girls to maintain an active, healthy lifestyle. Examples of Outdoor Program activities include backpacking trips, camping, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, paddling, rock climbing, bike safety, GPS orienteering, archery and "Adventures Outside" day camps, to name a few. In the summertime, resident camp is offered at Camp Alice Pittenger in McCall, ID and Camp Ta-Man-A-Wis in Swan Valley, ID. At a time when youth are getting outside less frequently, the Girl Scouts Outdoor Program is more valuable and relevant than ever. The organization's extra-curricular STEM program is one of the strongest in the state for K-12 girls. Girl Scouts of Silver Sage has provided thousands of Idaho girls with early and positive exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) with a goal to increase the number of Idaho girls that pursue STEM in college and careers. During 2017 alone, more than 750 girls participated in STEM learning experiences offered by the Silver Sage council. Many more engaged in STEM through troop activities, and 2,397 Girl Scout STEM badges were earned. Girl Scouts of Silver Sage has not been alone in its efforts to address the well-documented need in Idaho for more females in STEM career fields. We've partnered with Micron, Idaho STEM Action Center, Idaho Technology Council, Idaho Power, Discovery Center of Idaho, Boise State University (BSU), Idaho State University, and Society of Women Engineers, just to name a few. An essential component of Girl Scouting is community service. Girls choose, manage, and participate in community service projects that benefit thousands of Idaho families and individuals who are underprivileged, homeless, hungry, sick and/or disabled. Last year, Girl Scouts of Silver Sage performed more than 270,000 hours of community service. Please consider an investment in today's youth and tomorrow's leaders by contributing to Girl Scouts of Silver Sage.
