Mission Statement
Panhandle Special Needs, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation serving individuals with disabilities in Bonner and Boundary counties of Idaho. With unwavering dedication our mission is clear: to champion the self-respect, economic empowerment, and social inclusion of individuals with developmental disabilities within their communities
About This Cause
For over 45 years, PSNI has dedicated its resources to developing opportunities for people with disabilities living in Bonner and Boundary counties. Currently serving over 200 clients per year we help people live, work and play more independently in their communities. Panhandle Special Needs, Inc. (PSNI) opened their doors in 1975 to create a safe and productive environment for adults with disabilities. More than 45 years later, our agency now features specialized employment training, individualized life skills training, an adult day health center, a retail greenhouse, our retail thrift store The Cottage, Ace Cardboard Pickup Services and as of July 2023 our newest program Home ARP a federally funded grant dedicated to helping people with disabilities who are homeless. PSNI High School Work Experience - Panhandle Special Needs High School Work Experience program is designed to provide students with disabilities a variety of work experiences in their community. As a part of their school day these students earn school credit by participating in the different types of employment offered in our community. PSNI Employment Services - Employment Services focuses on training job seeking and job keeping skills needed for successful employment in the community. Our employment specialists work with the individual and the employer to develop a plan of supports for successful employment. PSNI Center Based Training - Our Center Based Work program is focused on training the most significantly disabled for future community employment. This program targets individuals who have been unable to maintain competitive employment or need to gain more experience prior to community employment. PSNI Life Skills Training - This unique program offers specialized training to adults with disabilities in the areas of budgeting, shopping, housekeeping, cooking and much more. Currently serving 70 individuals, our program has helped hundreds of people with disabilities successfully live in their own apartments, maintain employment, actively engage in their communities and develop healthy long term relationships with others. PSNI Adult Day Services… In April 2014 PSNI expanded its program to include Adult Day Health Services to better meet the needs of individuals with the most significant disabilities and individuals with disabilities who are aging. Currently serving 30 individuals we now offer recreational and social opportunities to this unique population. The Greenhouse….Our retail Greenhouse here at PSNI is used as a vehicle to provide employment training to our clients. Through this training we introduce transferable work skills such as work ethics, customer service and retail skills. Currently specializing in hanging baskets we typically open the weekend before Mother’s Day and remain open until stock runs out. The Cottage…. Our unique thrift store is set up in a beautiful old Craftsman style house built in the early 1900’s, equipped with eight rooms full of quality home and garden items priced to sell. Founded in 2010, The Cottage provides employment training opportunities for our clients as well as additional income for programs. Ace Cardboard Pickup Services – In Jan. 2022 we added a cardboard pick-up business to our program to provide job opportunities to people with disabilities who need regular supervision. Currently serving 87 businesses in Sandpoint, Sagle and Ponderay Idaho we employ a crew of 6 individuals with significant disabilities and recyle approximately 704,000 pounds of cardboard per year Home ARP – In July 2023 PSNI was awarded a federal grant to assist people with disabilities who are homeless
