Mission Statement

The mission of KIPP DFW is to provide children in underserved communities with a free, rigorous, high quality education that offers the knowledge, skills and character traits necessary to thrive in school, college and the competitive world beyond.

About This Cause

KIPP, the Knowledge is Power Program, is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory, public charter schools with a track record of preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and in life. KIPP began in 1994 with a powerful idea: to create a classroom that helped children develop the knowledge, skills, character, and habits necessary to succeed in college and build a better tomorrow for their communities. Founders Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin opened the first two KIPP middle schools in 1995, KIPP Academy in Houston, Texas, and KIPP Academy in The Bronx, New York. By 1999, these original KIPP charter schools were among the highest-performing schools in their respective communities. There are currently 183 KIPP schools in 20 states and the District of Columbia serving 70,000 students. More than 86 percent of our students are from low-income families and eligible for the federal free or reduced-price meals program, and 95 percent are African American or Latino. Nationally, more than 90 percent of KIPP middle school students have graduated high school, and more than 80 percent of KIPP alumni have gone on to college. There are 80 KIPP middle schools (grades 5-8), 60 elementary schools (grades Pre-K-4), and 22 high schools (grades 9-12). Students are accepted regardless of prior academic record, conduct or socioeconomic background.
