Mission Statement
Miss Tristan Foundation is an educational foundation focusing on drowning prevention through educational activities and supporting other organizations with similar goals. Miss Tristan Foundation was formed to ensure that Tristan would live on through our drowning prevention efforts. We are dedicated to raise water safety awareness through education of children and adults in and around spas, pools, and open bodies of water. Drowning is the Number 1 cause of accidental death for children under 5 and a leading cause of death for ages 1-14. Drowning is Preventable.
About This Cause
For the first time, Colin’s Hope will join together with Hope for the Future, the Department of Catholic Schools, and the YMCA to implement water safety training programs at 10 San Antonio Archdiocese schools through the generosity of the Miss Tristan Foundation. The initiative begins this Fall 2017 semester and extends throughout the school year. Drowning is the leading cause of death in children ages 5 and under; and a primary cause of death in children ages 1-14. For this very reason, Hope for the Future and the Department of Catholic Schools plan to not only raise awareness of this issue, but to provide practical lessons and training to prevent this tragedy from occurring in the future. Four-year-old students will receive on-land information water safety classes, based on curriculum created by Colin's Hope, as well as lessons in the pool - practicing the use of life jackets, teaching children to stay away from drains, and learning to swim. The Miss Tristan Foundation was created after the accidental drowning death of Tristan Byrd, to educate the public on the importance of water safety and make everyone aware that drowning is preventable. "The Miss Tristan Foundation believes that all childhood drownings are preventable,” said Joe Byrd, Jr., father of Tristan Byrd, and founder of the Miss Tristan Foundation. “Miss Tristan is working with our friends at Colin's Hope, the YMCA, and the Archdiocese of San Antonio to bring Water Safety training to Pre K-4 children attending Catholic schools in the San Antonio area." As Miss Tristan Foundation grows we are hoping to have water safety curriculum for Pre K-4 children in all schools possible in the San Antonio area. Our long term goal is to spread this program throughout South Texas and outward.
