Mission Statement

We are building a hyper scalable mentorship model for disadvantaged youth.

About This Cause

PowerUP was founded by "big" and "little" brothers Austin Scee and Mike Auzenne, respectively. After being matched with Austin through the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program in Atlanta, Mike went from the projects to Colgate to Wall Street to Harvard Business School and beyond. Austin and Mike deconstructed the mentorship model in order to build a model that scales better than the one to one volunteer match model of BBBS. PowerUP delivers the core elements of mentorship through martial arts senseis and our support staff. Successful mentorship is based on 1) core values, 2) expectations, and 3) access. Our senseis deliver the core values of SELF-CONTROL, RESILIENCE, and RESPECT through martial arts training. Self-control is highly correlated with health, wealth and happiness, because self-control leads to good decisions. Good decisions compounded over years and decades lead to success in all facets of life. Resilience (aka grit, perseverance) is also at the root of success. We teach our kids to respect themselves, their parents, teachers, peers, and even their adversaries. Respect opens doors. Expectation is equally important in mentorship. Our senseis are authority figures, and they are in a position to tell our students what they expect in their training, and in life. Finally, access to people, ideas, and opportunities is critical to success, even if the access is only knowledge of what's possible. We aspire to providing access beyond ideas.
