Mission Statement
Refugee Artisan Initiative (RAI) partners with refugee and immigrant women to foster an inclusive, prosperous transition to the US through artisan skills training and microbusiness development.
About This Cause
RAI works with refugee and immigrant women (artisans) to develop their own microbusinesses so they can set their own hours, work from home, and expand their business at their own pace. Refugee women have the highest unemployment rate (60%) of any group in the U.S. Language barriers, cultural differences, and parenting responsibilities all pose challenges, as is the case for immigrant women in general. Sewing is a skill familiar to many artisans, so we use it as a common language. We pay women training stipends and understand they need a flexible work-from-home model to care for their children after they gain sewn goods production skills. Unlike a traditional workforce organization, our programs not only help build wealth through microbusiness development and paid sewing skills development, but we also elevate each artisans' culture and art and ensure their families feel included in our organization. The women RAI serves are often mothers with young children at home. We work side-by-side with artisans to meet their unique needs and actively market their sewn goods and crafts and connect them to other business opportunities.
