INITIATE JUSTICE

LOS ANGELES, California, 90014 United States

Mission Statement

To end mass incarceration by activating the power of the people it directly impacts. We organize our members, both inside and outside of prisons, to advocate for their freedom and change criminal justice policy in California. We are 100% led by people in prison, formerly incarcerated people, and people with loved ones inside.

About This Cause

Ending mass incarceration requires a large, coordinated movement, with the insights and leadership of people who have been directly impacted by incarceration. We are organizing our community, and building their leadership and organizing power through the following programs: Inside Membership - as of December 2021, we have 45,000 members inside CA prisons (nearly 50% of all people in CA state prison) who receive quarterly newsletters with updates on changes to criminal justice law and policy that will affect them, as well as resources and guides on how to advocate for themselves and push for reforms to end mass incarceration. Inside Organizers - we have 200 Inside Organizers who receive our Inside Organizer toolkit, go through an onboarding process, and correspond with us monthly to lead campaigns inside, sign up new members, and build their leadership capacity. Inside Organizers get in-person trainings once, and regular phone trainings. Outside Organizers - 230 people have graduated from our Institute of Impacted Leaders, a 12-week community organizing and leadership development program, for directly impacted people across California. We have graduated cohorts across California, including Los Angeles, Oakland, Sacramento, Fresno, Bakersfield, Santa Barbara, Long Beach, the Inland Empire, and Orange County. Policy Advocacy - we have passed multiple laws to reduce sentences, bring people home, and improve conditions inside. These include SB 1437 (2018), AB 965 (2019), AB 45 (2019), ACA 6 / AB 646 (2020) and AB 292 (2021). We also led the Free the Vote Coalition to place Proposition 17 on the 2020 Ballot to restore voting rights to everyone on parole in CA, which passed with an overwhelming majority.
