Mission Statement
Urban Agriculture Cooperative’s mission is to heal the food system through building justice, sovereignty, health, and access. We operate farmers markets, train young adults, and coordinate special programs to support growers and food entrepreneurs. Our efforts work towards establishing an inclusive, sustainable, connected, and caring food economy where everyone can come to the table to have wholesome food to cook and eat.
About This Cause
Urban Agriculture Cooperative (UAC) is a three year old nonprofit that aims to increase food access, develop the urban foodshed, and build equity and environmental restoration into the food system at large. See below for more information on our programs: Online Farmer's Market The Cooperative Market, UAC's online retail farmer's market, aggregates locally grown products from several small Newark and NJ-based suppliers. Through this supply chain, and in partnerships with other Newark based organizations, UAC provides fresh food boxes to local families to help alleviate food insecurity. www.urbanagcoop.market Foodshed Development Opportunities UAC provides farm builds, soil testing, food and farm training reimbursements, and fiscal sponsorships for our nearby agricultural and food community. This year this work is best exemplified in our coordination of West Side High School's Rider Farm project with Principle Akbar Cook. Accessible Community Composting in NJ UAC is stakeholder with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection on a new rulemaking initiative that will allow small volume food waste management at community gardens. We have been advocating for this since 2018 with a petition to include composting at community gardens in NJDEP's exemption rules as an equity and access issue.
