Mission Statement
Red Dot Foundation Global aims to make cities safer by encouraging equal access to public and private spaces for everyone especially women, through the use of crowdsourced data, community engagement and institutional accountability.
About This Cause
Safecity is a platform that crowdsources personal stories of sexual harassment and abuse in public spaces. Registered in USA as Red Dot Foundation Global (501c3 not for profit organisation) and in India as Red Dot Foundation. This data which maybe anonymous, gets aggregated on a map indicating trends at a local level. The idea is to make this data useful for individuals, local communities and local administration to identify factors that causes behaviour that leads to violence and work on strategies for solutions. Since our launch on 26 Dec 2012 we have collected over 55,000 stories from India, Kenya, Cameroon, Nepal, Nigeria and Trinidad & Tobago and directly reached over 1.5 million people. Red Dot Foundation Global was founded in 2017 in the United States to support the work on sexual violence. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday gave a shout out to Indian gender activist and social entrepreneur Elsa Marie D'Silva for her efforts towards combating gender-based violence, saying examples such as hers fill him with hope for the future. "I am thinking of people like Elsa Marie D'Silva from India, who co-founded a platform that crowdsources and maps sexual violence and harassment ... Her efforts are mobilising thousands of young people around the world to break the silence and end gender-based violence," Guterres said in his opening remarks at the 9th Global Forum of the Alliance of Civilisations in Fez, Morocco. Hillary Clinton mentioned Safecity at the Vital Voices Global Leadership Awards, stating that it is a great example of technology for good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K13t9HokURU&feature=youtu.be
