Mission Statement
American Baroque Opera Company, based in Dallas, presents both familiar operas and rarely heard gems of the baroque, as fully staged productions, in an intimate style to educate new audiences about authentic early music performance practice.
About This Cause
Fifteen years ago, Artistic Director Eric Smith, had a dream: to form an opera company unlike any other in the region; one that used Baroque practice, like Handel and his contemporaries intended; opera that reflected the environment in which opera was created; luscious and ornate music exquisitely played by a smaller ensemble, performed in an intimate setting where the audience can feel the story and drama of the opera in a new and exciting way. Eric, along with his husband, violist Miguel Cantu and ABOC co-founder, envisioned an opera company based in Dallas that presented works fully staged and performed by musicians and singers who are specialists in the early music field, further establishing Dallas as a leader in the arts in the US. This season, the American Baroque Opera Company debuts with an opera cabaret, designed to entice opera lovers to enjoy the music of Baroque composers and sample what ABOC can offer. In March, the Company will produce its first fully staged opera, Handel's masterpiece Alcina, in the Dallas Arts District. Eric and Miguel, along with co-founder Hillary Coyle, wish to present lush opera productions to a diverse audience, both current opera-goers and arts lovers who want to dip their toes into the cool, refreshing pool of Baroque masterworks. After their much anticipated debut season, hear why critics are raving over the American Baroque Opera Co., calling them 'completely unpretentious, and effortlessly opulent' (Schmopera), 'captivating storytelling' (TheaterJones), and 'excellent, stylish' (Dallas Morning News). Established in 2017, the American Baroque Opera Co. presents to Dallas audiences intimate staged productions of operas from the Baroque era. In addition to presenting works of well known composers including Handel, Vivaldi, and Purcell, their mission is to resurrect the operas of lesser known baroque composers, famous in their day, whose operas have fallen into obscurity. ABOC performs on period instruments with authentic historical performance practice, and are excited to educate and entertain new audiences with these masterpieces of the baroque.
