Mission Statement
Empower young college and university graduates to develop and implement practical solutions to health system challenges, prioritizing the challenges that affect the rural and urban poor.
About This Cause
Afara International is a US-based not-for-profit organization focused on strengthening health systems through youth empowerment in developing countries. Afara International is registered with Nigeria's Corporate Affairs Commission as Afaracare Nigeria. We confront two issues with one initiative. By having young talents at the center of our work, we chip away at youth unemployment while accelerating health system strengthening efforts. Our ongoing projects are summarized below: 1. COVID-19 Response: We fight misinformation through public education. 2. COVID-19 Response: We support infection prevention and control measures at poorly funded primary health care institutions by making quality fabric face masks and fabricating hand washing stations for them. 3. Support rural health centers: We learn about the felt needs of health workers and design solutions with them. We renovate and restructure built environments; design tools for documentation; organize refresher trainings for rural health workers; and revive dying facilities by equipping and advocating for health workers. 4. Youth Capacity Development: We empower youths who have managed to obtain college or university but who lack opportunity for work and personal development. We connect them to online learning platforms; provide them with cellular data for internet access, and provide virtual spaces for them to learn in small groups. 5. Employment: We provide decent work to selected unemployed youths who show commitment, empathy, integrity and growth as volunteers and trainees. All our projects are executed by formerly unemployed youths who acquired basic transferable skills through our platform.
