Mission Statement
Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue (TSGSR) is an all-volunteer, foster-based, Animal Welfare organization. TSGSR saves and finds homes for abandoned German Shepherd Dogs (GSDs) and mixes 10 years old and older, and also terminally ill dogs. Medical condition is not a determining criterion as long as the dog has some quality life left, even as little as a few months. TSGSR covers medical costs for all program dogs for life, even after they are adopted. We serve all of California, both for rescues and for adoptions. The Thulani Program has been rescuing seniors since January 2012 and has successfully saved and rehomed more than 350 dogs. TSGSR is a non-profit, public benefit, tax-exempt 501 (c)(3) corporation. About This Cause
INTRODUCTION Thulani Senior German Shepherd Rescue, Inc. (TSGSR), is an all volunteer non-profit Charitable Organization dedicated to rescuing senior and/or terminally ill German Shepherd Dogs (GSDs) and GSD mixes from life-threatening situations. Our main activities are rescuing, fostering and getting these special needs dogs the medical treatment and care they have been lacking, and evaluating both the dogs and possible homes for a forever match. Few senior dogs get adopted by the public directly from the shelters. Bluntly, TSGSR activities are the main deterrent preventing nearly a hundred of these most vulnerable GSDs every year from dying alone and afraid among strangers in the back rooms of shelters, dying when they still had quality life left in them. The Thulani Program launched in January 2012 to serve all of California. Our successes: 1) saved more than 350 very old and vulnerable GSDs for life-threatening situations and found loving homes for them to live out their natural lives in comfort; 2) more than 1300 people nation-wide have contributed money to support our work; and 3) most astonishing, more than 60% of the people who have adopted one of our senior Thulani dogs, have come back to adopt another. OUR CHARITABLE MISSION AND ACTIVITIES 1. Rescuing senior and/or terminally ill German Shepherd Dogs (GSDs) and mixes from life-threatening situations and finding forever homes for them-- 80% We are almost unique in California in that we rescue the very senior and ill GSDs that have little chance of making it out of shelters alive, and we commit to paying medical costs for these dogs even after adopted. Vet bills are our main expense (roughly 90%). We charge no adoption fee. Elderly people on fixed incomes can afford our dogs. We set a goal of 100 dogs saved annually, a number that we estimate will basically eliminate any Thulani-qualified dog from dying prematurely in a California shelter. More work will be needed to prevent senior dogs from being euthanized by veterinarians at the request of owners. 2. Public education and outreach—20% We work to educate the public and change attitudes about the pleasures, benefits, and long-term satisfaction of adopting or fostering very old German Shepherds, of keeping their own dogs as they get older, of saving old dogs from shelters, and of ways they might start a rescue like Thulani. a. Social media presence—We host an active facebook page (www.facebook.com/ThulaniProgram/) and website (www.thulanidogs.org). b. Publish articles—We have published in Schutzhund USA, The German Shepherd Dog Review, and the Rally to Rescue magazine, advocating the adoption of senior German Shepherds, and have been featured in a Washington Post story (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/animalia/wp/2017/03/03/more-people-are-adopting-old-dogs-really-old-dogs/?utm_term=.600db09c94e3) c. Direct personal interaction with the public on matters concerning senior German Shepherds—We communicate directly with people about senior dog issues, primarily at Adoptions Days and other public events, and through direct communications via phone, email and the internet. d. Working nationally to change public attitudes toward adopting senior dogs--We will expand our national educational presence--advocating for adopting senior dogs. We will work closely with the Grey Muzzle Organization (www.greymuzzle.org) and the Miracle GSD Network. We bring to the table a database of results from saving and tracking over 350 dogs and from having ‘boots on the ground’ experience actually saving and rehoming these dogs.
