Mission Statement

RESPONDERS RETREAT, INC. IS DEDICATED TO SERVING EMERGENCY RESPONSE PERSONNEL INCLUDING DISPATCHERS, LAW ENFORCEMENT, FIRE, EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES, AND EMERGENCY ROOM STAFF WITH A RESPITE ENVIRONMENT AND RESOURCES TO HELP MANAGE STRESS THAT IS INCURRED IN THE COURSE OF PUBLIC SERVICE RESPONSE. OUR PURPOSE IS TO CONTRIBUTE POSITIVELY TO THEIR PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL, AND SOCIAL WELL BEING BY OFFERING THEM A SAFE, CONFIDENTIAL PLACE TO OPEN A CONVERSATION ABOUT THEIR STRESS AND HOW IT IS AFFECTING THEM NOT ONLY IN THE WORKPLACE, BUT ALSO IN THEIR HOME AND THEIR SOCIAL LIFE.

About This Cause

Every hour of everyday across this country, calls come in for people needing assistance from the millions of first responders ready and willing to help. To those responders, some calls seem basic or average, but other calls can be overwhelming and horrific. We can't imagine what they see, hear, smell, taste, or touch in the line of duty. Some responders will go home after a call and never have a negative effect from it while others struggle and wonder why they can't put the call out of their mind and move on. Days, weeks, and months go by and it doesn't get any better. Still, they won't seek help for fear of losing their job or promotion, fear of being ridiculed and ostracized, and fear of being seen as weak and of little value. Various studies have identified post traumatic stress disorder (ptsd) present in 7-30% of all response personnel. Suicide numbers are on the rise for these brave men and women also. Responders Retreat will offer first responders from all across this country a safe, peaceful environment to join together with others like themselves and peer mentors from their fields. Here they will be able open a conversation to share their feelings and struggles without fear of judgement. They will know that they are not alone, they are valued and cared about, and that their life can get better. They will have time to process their thoughts but also have time to relax, reflect, and de-stress through such activities as, hiking, biking, fishing, casual conversation by the campfire, or just enjoying the beauty of the Northwoods and the nature. Education will be provided as to the different types of counseling and treatments available. The goal is that they will go home feeling rested, valued, and have a plan going forward toward a better quality of life; for all they do for all of us it's something they all deserve. Responders Retreat will be accessible regardless of whether they are currently a responder, retired, full or part-time, union or volunteer . Since this type of stress affects the entire family, we intend to offer spouses their own time to attend and share their struggles offering them support through each other, and through us. We advocate for counseling to help get through this stress, however not everyone will seek counseling, knowing they are not alone and they have others who share the same struggles to confide in is a step in the right direction. To accomplish some level of decompression we offer conversation, information, and recreation is a beautiful, peaceful setting. Studies have shown the positive effects nature can have on our mental state.
