Mission Statement
Through rigorous curriculum and high quality instruction, provided within an invested and ambitious school community, Emblaze Academy Charter School prepares all students in grades five through eight to thrive in high school and graduate from the college of their choice.
About This Cause
Approved by the New York State Education Department in June 2017 and opened during the 2018-19 academic year to its first class of 5th graders, Emblaze Academy Charter School (“Emblaze Academy”) is founded on the belief that all students can achieve at the highest academic levels when held to high expectations. Through research-based, inquiry-driven, liberal arts curriculum; intensive teacher training and numerous professional development opportunities; and a focus on celebrating the South Bronx and empowering the school community, Emblaze Academy is providing an education that will open doors, shift mindsets, and enable opportunities for underserved students in the South Bronx. Emblaze Academy’s overarching goal is to prepare its students for success in New York City’s most competitive high schools as well as in colleges across the nation. While only in its second year of operation, Emblaze Academy is already delivering on its promise to provide rigorous curriculum and high-quality instruction to hundreds of at-risk middle school students in the South Bronx, as evidenced by its impressive first year outcomes: (-) We have seen significant gains in our students’ proficiency in core subject matter. On average, our students progressed 1.59 years in Math and 1.30 years in Reading proficiency. Notably, our first cohort of English Language Learners gained more years in Math (1.65) than the overall student population, and our special education students gained more years in Reading (1.35) than the overall student population. (-) Investments we make in our educators are paying off. A resounding 100% of teachers returned for the 2019/20 academic year. As part of our Education Model, Emblaze Academy teachers receive hundreds of hours of professional development every year. Beginning in the summer with 3 full weeks of intensive training – focused on year-long curriculum planning, systems-based norming, and lesson execution practice – and continuing with regular training and coaching throughout the academic year, each teacher annually receives 400+ hours of professional development. (-) We celebrate our students’ achievements year-round, increasing their self-confidence and commitment to learning. Across a total of 35 weekly “Community Circles,” we recognized students with a variety of Teacher Awards, including Reader Leader, Mathematician, Historian, and Most Improved Participant – creating a positive school culture where all students feel valued. At Honor Society held at the end of each trimester, we celebrated improved and high GPAs as well as exceptional demonstrations of character. This recognition is highly meaningful to students and parents alike: 96% of students feel like they are respected and 91% feel they are recognized for their work, and as one parent said, “Emblaze has been patient, showing my child authority, respect and reassurance of his abilities.” (-) We received even more applicants than the previous year, underscoring the demand for Emblaze Academy in our community. For the 2019-20 academic year, we saw a 122% increase in applicants per seat, with an average of about six applicants for every seat.
