Mission Statement
Our mission is to build an online mentorship platform that serves underrepresented students with limited access to college and career guidance. Hey Mentor provide one-on-one support to high school students, guiding them through their college and career journey. Our online-platform removes barriers to access and our college-based Hey Mentor Student Chapters provide college students with personalized learning opportunities in marketing, technology, and leadership. All of our services are offered at no cost to mentees.
About This Cause
Students from low-income backgrounds and poor school districts are less likely to pursue postsecondary education compared to students from better-funded school districts. Existing in-person educational mentorship programs that are delivered during the school day or after school can be inaccessible to students and volunteers due to scheduling, transportation, and location barriers. This contributes to low attendance rates in college mentorship programs, meaning students are not accessing the resources they need to prepare for college. Further, low volunteer retention rates for in-person mentorship programs are impacted by commute times and low mentee attendance. HM addresses the educational opportunity gap by offering online college mentorship to students. Our high retention rates are owed to the ease in which volunteers and mentees can schedule and attend check-in’s, and our high levels of mentee engagement are a product of using social media platforms that resonate with youth. Hey Mentor was created by students of color from South King County who were born and raised in Washington State. Currently, over 82% of our volunteers are people of color and over 60% are first generation college students. A team of 25 high school students supported the creation of HM. Their contributions included designing our logo and website, creating our mission statement and vision, determining the name of our organization, and providing feedback on the mentorship framework. In Spring 2018, we are launching a student ambassador role so that high school students can practice leadership skills and connect with ambassadors from partner schools. Our target mentees are underrepresented youth with limited access to college and career guidance. They may identify as low-income, first generation, and/or students of color (e.g. Black, Hispanic, Asian, and/or American Indian). Underrepresented students participating in other college access programs are welcome to participate in Hey Mentor. Project Summary Create a student information system that provides mentors and students a way to track progress such as college application completion, college acceptance, college enrollment, scholarship completion, and so forth. Secondly, create a mobile application with algorithms to support a mentorship matchmaking function so that students can be matched with mentors based on career goals and colleges they are interested in. Proposed Project Development of mobile-app including: Matchmaking function Notification function (to remind mentors to check-in with students, to let students know when important deadlines are approaching) (optional, but ideal) a chatting function directly on the mobile app to improve communication rates between mentor and students Develop methods to track student progress and outcomes Student information system (mentors: to track student progress, admin: program deliverables/outcomes, and students: to be able to provide program evaluation) Stakeholders Students, parents, educators, counselors, community-based organizations, community colleges, four-year colleges, and libraries Skills Mobile app developer, iOS developer, android developer, full stack, front-end, back-end, java, python, objective-c, C++, UI/UX, algorithms, information systems, data analytics, data science, SQL/NoSQL, animation, software developer, marketing/social media marketing, filmmaking Contact Kevin Truong, Founder & Executive Director, kmtruong@uw.edu or 206-354-7168
