Mission Statement
Helping Hands for Single Moms Dallas supports single moms families as mom attains a post-secondary degree, financial independence, and a positive family legacy. Our vision is to end generational poverty.
About This Cause
Helping Hands for Single Mom (HHSM) began as a pilot project in 2002 and advanced through collaborative research with Arizona State University’s Partnership for Community Development ultimately launching in 2005. Since then, the award-winning, model program has provided over $6 million in scholarships and support delivering services to hundreds of low-income single mom college student families. 252 single moms with more than 350 children have earned a college degree with the assistance of HHSM. On average, the annual income of our single moms' incoming applications is $9000, the average starting salary of our graduates is $50,000. Ultimately ending their families struggle with poverty and ending the cycle of generational impoverishment. Based on a 2016 study by “College Success Arizona,” HHSM’s 252 graduates will produce a $166 million gain for the economy of the state of Arizona over the life of their careers. With a 90% graduation rate, far exceeding national rates, our moms are poised to have a significant impact on the communities in which they live. The Dallas affiliate was incorporated in June 2017. An executive director was hired in 2019 and we began accepting clients in the Dallas area in April. We currently have 10 single mom college student families in the program and will end 2019 with 24 single mom college student families being supported by our program. In 2020, our goal is to double in size, supporting 48 single mom college student families by the end of the year. Helping Hands for Single Moms provides each client with either a $2,000 or $3,600 annual scholarship. These scholarships are supplemented by the following wrap-around services provided by partners from the business, civic, academic and faith communities. Benefits include but are not limited to: No cost auto repair & donated vehicles; AAA towing memberships; Emergency Dental Care for Moms; holiday gifts for the kids; family outings; and a Single Mom College Community. We host single mom college networking groups. These groups provide: an opportunity for HHSM to connect with students every six weeks; day of mentors if necessary for certain fields of study; and, a venue for single mom college students to develop mutually supportive relationships. HHSM is an award-winning organization. Since 2006, the following recognitions have been given to our program: 2015, Chris Coffman, CEO, received the Arizona Education Champion award presented by the Arizona Commission for Postsecondary Education; 2011, Arizona Interfaith Movement, The Golden Rule – Strengthening Families award - one of seven awarded statewide; 2011, Phoenix Business Journal “Heart of Business” award given to NARPRO (Neighborhood Auto-Professionals) for services to Helping Hands for Single Mom clients (Helping Hands for Single Moms was the nominating organization); 2009, Arizona Commission for Postsecondary Education recognized Helping Hands for Single Moms with a distinguished state-wide award as an educational leader assisting single mom college students; 2008, KAET – TV Channel 8 “Be More Awards,” the “Judges Choice” award for the non-profit that demonstrates “original and extraordinary effort….” (a distinguished award as the programs of 130 non-profits were considered). Along with financial aid, the HHSM program engages the community in providing practical support services to single mom college student families.
