Mission Statement
The South Teas Alliance for Orphans serves and equips the church in fulfilling the biblical call to care children and families impacted by the foster care system.
About This Cause
The South Texas Alliance for Orphans (The Alliance) was formed to fill a gap in our community, a gap that is failing our community's youngest, most vulnerable members who have experienced abuse and neglect. The Alliance fills the gap between the state's foster care crisis of not enough safe families for children with the faith communities call to care and the various organizations serving specific pieces along the foster care continuum of a family crisis to youth aging out. The Alliance grew organically for 6 years until late 2016 under the leadership of the founder and current Executive Director Jennifer Smith. As interest grew in 2016, we felt the most responsible and time-sensitive approach to meet the demand was becoming a DBA under the San Antonio Marriage Initiative. We obtained our own 501c3 in July of 2018. Research has shown that the local church is the most robust service delivery system in America with the essential infrastructure to help solve the foster crisis. The state of Texas is also actively asking the faith community's help. Over the past 27 months, due in large part to grants from this foundation, the Alliance has increased the number of churches committed to or currently engaged in foster ministry from 10 to 37! We have trained 125 ministry leaders. Through the Babysitting Collaborative, we worked with 13 foster agencies to come up with one training and procedure that culminated in a one-day training which netted 271 new certified foster care babysitters to support foster families. We have increased our community collaborators from 12 to 27. Of the active foster families supported through one of our churches, none dissolved a placement and 100% of the families are still fostering after 1-year beating local statistics and helping children heal through stability.
