Mission Statement

Altagracia Faith and Justice Works empowers community leaders to put faith into action and promote social justice through faith formation, leadership development, service and advocacy opportunities, and through community organizing to effect essential local change.

About This Cause

Altagracia Faith and Justice Works (AFJW) runs a youth service-learning program called “Global Thinking, Local Action, Universal Impact (GLU),” which is a week-long program that addresses themes such as Hunger and Food Justice, Housing and Homelessness, and Environmental Justice. AFJW also organizes and supports Social Justice Ministry teams or Justice, Peace, Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Committees in local Catholic parishes to address the local social justice issues that team members identify and prioritize, and connects these teams to other resources, community-based organizations, and coalitions, including Interfaith Coalitions. Social Justice Ministry teams and JPIC Committees address issues such as: tenant rights, immigrant rights, homeless outreach, Care for Creation/Environmental Justice, Anti-racism initiatives, and health initiatives such as pop-up vaccine events, and a mutual aid Community fridge at Church of St. Jude at 205th Street to address rising rates of food insecurity during the pandemic.
