Mission Statement
STEM Generation is dedicated to empowering under-recognized students in high-needs schools through STEM education, inspiring them to appreciate that all students have the talent and ability to become successful STEM leaders.
About This Cause
STEM Generation is bridging the gap of learning opportunities while reshaping the perception of STEM professionals, creating meaningful experiences through insightful conversations and hands-on curriculum, and connecting students with professionals across Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math industries. Since 2017, we have engaged over 15,000 students in their programs. Our programs aim to address 5 major barriers to STEM education: Cost: The of materials and training is too high for underserved schools. Lack of established standards: This makes it challenging to create curriculum. Teacher training: Not every teacher has the background to teach STEM and the demands far outweigh the supply. Consistency across grades: In order for STEM to be successful, there needs to be a clear linear STEM education pathway from elementary school through high school. This includes scaffolding upon prior knowledge from one grade to another. Equity: Black, hispanic, native american, and women are all underrepresented in STEM fields. This also applies to students with different abilities, such as dyslexia, are on the autism spectrum, have mental health issues or other learning challenges that may deter them from wanting to enter STEM fields. To help close these gaps, STEM Generation offers 3 main programs. The Diverse STEM Stories program brings STEM role models from local businesses and universities into classrooms to share their journey into STEM, exposing students to new career options. Science & Engineering Fair opportunities provides students with the essential tools needed to participate, ensuring that all interested students have the opportunity to take part. STEM Curriculum empowers students to develop crucial STEM skills through our hands-on curriculum kits. Each lesson scaffolds upon one another culminating in an authentic science project that can be showcased in classroom, school, district, or other science fairs.
