Mission Statement

The Writer's Workout seeks to motivate and encourage self-growth and development of creative writers around the world through accessible education. We can help you be a better writer.

About This Cause

Why Donate? The Writer's Workout (WW) is run entirely by volunteers. Since 2014, we've been providing free opportunities to help writers develop their skills and get published. From monthly courses to judged competitions to six publications a year, WW challenges writers to venture outside their comfort zone and push themselves to explore their creativity. If a judged competition seems like too much pressure, our Resources tab offers an extensive list of writing prompts and personal challenges to help writers practice their skills on their own. What We Offer WW is the home of The Writer's Games, an award-winning writing competition with six new challenges (Events) over six weeks. This competition occurs once or twice a year, depending on our schedule, though we took a break in 2023 and accidentally launched a new competition. The Writer's Games is free for all writers and open worldwide. It focuses on Core Concepts: the key elements of writing. These concepts include things like description, character development, backstory, etc, to help guide writers to strengthening their writing foundation. Writer's Games entries are judged blind by college student interns: the future of the writing industry. For The Writer's Games, each entry receives honest, unbiased feedback from multiple judges with varying backgrounds, experiences, and literary tastes. This constructive criticism helps writers understand how successful their original draft might be, what they did well, and how they can improve. In 2023, we launched Fiction Potluck. This quarterly competition is free for all writers and open worldwide. Potluck includes a guest judge (an industry professional: authors, agents, editors, etc) who chooses the challenge, blind judgement, and featured finalists. Join us for Fiction Potluck Friday at the end of each quarter to read the three winning entries on our blog! In 2022, we launched Back to Basics, a monthly (ish)mini-course. Each B2B course explores a topic central to the art of creative writing, breaks it down into digestible pieces, provides examples, and issues a challenge for writers to try on their own. Anyone can submit their challenge for free feedback. In 2020, we launched WayWords, a quarterly literary journal. Our journal promotes publication as an achievable option for writers around the world. This journal publishes 10-20 stories, poems, and essays every quarter. To date, this journal has included works by more than 180 writers. In 2018, we launched Tales, a themed anthology series, to provide publication opportunities to writers outside the realm of The Writer's Games. To date, this publication has included works by more than 50 writers. The Writer's Workout helps community members develop a stronger understanding of language. We host monthly Write Chats on the second Saturday (join us at 7pm, UTC) in our Discord server and encourage writers to build and explore the sense of community associated with writing. With weekly blog posts, a monthly focus topic, mini-courses, hundreds of prompts, and ample space for constructive critique, our organization helps writers develop their author voice and improve their writing quickly. How You Can Help Running WW requires a team of volunteers who donate thousands of hours annually. Your tax-deductible monetary donation helps alleviate production costs for competitions, workshops, and anthologies. It helps provide prizes and pays for features like our website. Every donation goes back into our community.
