Mission Statement
The Bay Area Disc Association strengthens the Ultimate community by creating opportunities for youth, club and adult recreational athletes to interact, develop and compete. We foster positive playing and learning experiences and embrace Spirit of the Game in all aspects of our work and play. We envision a Bay Area full of healthy, thriving, compassionate, and skilled individuals who live in strong, inclusive, equitable, and interconnected communities. We use the unique sport of ultimate to improve individuals and communities, creating the future we want to see.
About This Cause
The Bay Area Disc Association is a nonprofit organization that serves as the SF Bay Area's hub for ultimate frisbee. We have driven the rapid growth of youth and adult ultimate locally over the past 12 years, and we now serve almost 5,000 players annually in leagues, tournaments, clinics, and summer camps. Beyond running ultimate programs, we go to great lengths to ensure the equitable growth of the ultimate community, and this is exactly the work that we need donor funding to support! We are a national leader in gender equity in ultimate: - Since 2015, we’ve increased our percentage of female participants from 31% (national average) to 37% - Our innovative GURLS program empowers girls with leadership skills and strong mentors - We run free girls’ clinics and reduced-fee, girls-only leagues, camps, and tournaments - Several rec leagues kick off with free women’s-only clinics to recruit and retain female players We foster diversity and socioeconomic equity: - Since 2015, we’ve expanded the annual amount of need-based financial aid awarded from $4,250 to $18,000! - In 2018, we’re running after-school ultimate programs at 3 schools in low-income West Oakland neighborhoods, free of cost for at-risk youth and their families - We run 10+ free adult events each year, including quarterly “People’s Hat” tournaments, to keep the sport affordable and accessible to everyone
