Mission Statement
The mission of More in Common is to understand the forces driving us apart, find common ground, and help bring Americans together to tackle our shared challenges.
About This Cause
As a research and civic organization, More in Common produces regular reports on the psychology of our division through field-leading public opinion research and partners with other leaders and organizations who share our values to help them identify strategies, communications, and audiences which further their missions. Our approach can be summarized in three connected streams of work: Producing paradigm-shifting insights through research and thought leadership. We conduct rigorous, original research, grounded in the science of social psychology, on Americans' attitudes around politics, faith, social connection, civics, immigration, and American identity. We reveal areas of commonality and shared beliefs, elevating perspectives that may otherwise be drowned out by those incentivized to stoke division. Perhaps the most well-known example of this is our groundbreaking Hidden Tribes report, which has been cited hundreds of times and presents a paradigm utilized by leaders across political parties. More recent examples include our Perception Gap studies – which illuminate the difference between what we think “the other side” believes, and what they actually believe – on political ideology, history, and faith in America. Our work illuminating perception gaps has been instrumental in helping recognize the role our misperceptions play in driving our feelings of partisan animosity, highlighting common ground, identifying areas of genuine conflict, and revealing ways Americans can come together to solve problems and make progress. Forging deep and meaningful partnerships that catalyze change. We equip partner organizations working across civil society, philanthropy, media, business, government, and other institutions with vital insights to craft effective strategies that bridge divides and disrupt polarization. Our partners include organizations working directly in the bridge-building, pluralism, and democracy spaces, as well as organizations trying to solve some of our society’s greatest challenges, but for whom deep polarization is affecting their ability to make progress. From immigration to racial justice, faith leaders to veterans’ service organizations, philanthropy, businesses, and media associations, we have worked with hundreds of partners and leaders from diverse sectors, backgrounds, geographies, and ideologies who turn to us as a credible resource for insights to better understand Americans’ attitudes and beliefs, the drivers of polarization, and how to reach new audiences. Helping build up a more powerful ecosystem of people, organizations, and initiatives in service of our mission. We regularly host, facilitate, and support convenings that bring people and organizations together, connecting unlikely allies, and building durable relationships to combat polarization. For example, bringing together a wide constellation of actors working to protect democracy and leading them through a multi-day scenario planning exercise to prevent election-related violence. More in Common is uniquely positioned to lead ecosystem building due to our credibility across the political spectrum and the trust our partner-centered, relationship building approach has created. More in Common US works in partnership with national teams in Brazil, France, Germany, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom towards a shared vision for more united and inclusive democratic societies, in which people believe and feel that what they have in common is stronger than what divides them.
