Mission Statement
Through economic business development for property owners and merchants, beautification of public spaces for all to enjoy and a safe livable environment – Japantown will continue to thrive as a culturally rich, authentic, and economically vibrant neighborhood which will continue to serve as the cultural heart of the Japanese and Japanese American communities for generations to come.
About This Cause
The Japantown Community Benefit District (JCBD) is located in historic Japantown in San Francisco (SF), CA USA, one of 3 remaining Japantown's in the entire United States. The JCBD is charged with maintaining and improving Japantown's environmental cleanliness and economic sustainability to support the residents, small businesses, corporations and tourists that make up the community of Japantown. The JCBD deploys Community Ambassadors to help keep the neighborhood clean, as well as provide assistance to the local merchants and tourists alike. The JCBD acts as one of the main points of contact with SF City agencies, such as the SF Police Department, SF Department of Public Health, and the SF Office of Economic and Workforce Development; helping to bring information and connections from these agencies to the local community members, many of whom require language translation assistance, which the JCBD works to facilitate. The JCBD also looks at ways to promote the entire Japantown community, not only as a destination for out-of-town visitors but for locals as well, to support our small businesses. The JCBD also launched the Heart of Jtown Resiliency fund, which provided direct support to the many small businesses in this community who were affected by the Cocid-19 pandemic. Through these efforts, the JCBD works to help sustain Japantown into the future by supporting the property owners, workers, residents and visitors of this historic community. We will rise together from this pandemic, strengthen our community and show by example the resiliency of our Japantown community.
