Mission Statement

Friends LA impacts generational change by empowering youth facing the greatest obstacles through relationships with professional mentors - 12+ years, no matter what.

About This Cause

In 2017, Friends of the Children—Los Angeles (Friends L.A.) launched as part of a national network of Friends of the Children sites dedicated to impacting generational change by empowering youth facing the greatest obstacles through relationships with professional mentors – 12+ years, no matter what. We provide youth with a nurturing, long-term professional mentor – called a "Friend" – who gives 1:1 support in the home and classroom 2-4 hours weekly to ensure healthy social and emotional development, safety, educational success, and overall well-being of their youth. Friends-L.A.’s innovative two-generation (2Gen), preventative approach focuses on parenting foster youth as well as their children who are vulnerable for entry into the foster care system. We leverage 26 years of proven into an effective model for early intervention for children and families who have been impacted by foster care. We recently expanded from Metro and South Los Angeles to Antelope Valley, again applying our data-driven model to prevent child entry into foster care, promote health and well-being for the entire family, mobilize parents to create a pathway to self-sufficiency, and prepare youth for a lifetime of entrepreneurship and success. We have a positive impact on the life-course trajectories of the children with whom we work: · 83% of our youth earn a high school diploma or GED; while 60% have a parent who did not. · 93% avoid the juvenile justice system; though at least half have parents who have been incarcerated. · 98% avoid early parenting; despite 85% having been born to a teen parent. · 92% of graduates achieve one of the “3 E’s”: Enrollment in post-secondary education; Enlistment in the military; and Employment in a living-wage job. Our vision is that one day all children will have a long-term, consistent relationship with a caring adult who believes in them. We want to change the way the world views and treats our most vulnerable children.
