Mission Statement
The Mission of the Sailing Science Center is to inspire a passion for sailing and science by delighting people through discovery and play.
About This Cause
The San Francisco Sailing Science Center was founded to create an interactive science museum framed around sailing. The target location for the museum is a historic airplane hangar on San Francisco's Treasure Island, adjacent to the city's only community sailing center and the site of the U.S. Olympic Team's new training center. The Sailing Science Center seeks to create 200-300 interactive exhibits, divided into seven galleries*, providing a comprehensive educational experience for guests from 5 to 95. During the development phase of the project, from 2019 through 2025, exhibits will be delivered through mobile outreach to nearby elementary, middle and high schools, with docents/trainers providing support to help teachers deliver on Next Generation Science Standards. The museum is being designed to celebrate the history, culture and science of sailing throughout the world, but with particular emphasis on San Francisco Bay. Additionally, the Sailing Science Center is designed to promote leadership, stewardship of the oceans and development of the scientific and technical skills we will need to face many of our biggest challenges going forward. *The Seven Galleries: 1. Airflow, Sails and Sailing (aerodynamics) 2. Waves, Hull Resistance and Hydrostatics (hydrodynamics & hydrostatics) 3. Mechanical Advantage & Human Factors 4. Navigation & Astronomy 5. Weather & Oceanography 6. Anchoring & Knots 7. Structures & Materials
