Mission Statement
Third Wave Volunteers is a global disaster relief non-profit set up to mobilize medical and non-medical first responders to aid women, children, and refugees in disadvantaged and affected communities with medical, food aid, clean water, solar, and disaster training after natural and man-made disasters for the past 25 years.
About This Cause
THE THIRD WAVE is a movement of global Volunteerism based on the concept that "EVERYONE IS NEEDED." Volunteering can range from long-term missions in far-off countries to volunteering on a computer for a few hours after work. Third Wave Volunteers was founded by Dr. Alison Thompson after the September 11th, 2001, attacks in NYC, where she was a first responder for nine months. Third Wave comprises over 30,000 medical and non-medical volunteers who respond to large natural and man-made disasters worldwide. Over the past 24 years, our volunteers have run large refugee camps, field hospitals, and resilience command centers in nearly every major global natural disaster. This includes Sept 11th, 2001, Sri Lanka, Haiti, and Nepal earthquakes, the Philippines typhoons, the Bahamas hurricanes, USA hurricanes, Guatemala and St Vincent eruptions, Greece, Turkey, Macedonia, Maui fires, Colombia, and the Syrian, Afghan, Venezuela, and Ukraine refugee crises. With 1.6 billion people living without electricity or light, we focus on solar lighting up the darkest parts of the world, helping women, children, and vulnerable and minority populations. Soon, we will have a tragedy for every date on the calendar. And with every new disaster, the old one fades away far before the recovery does. As political animals, we have the intelligence and power to do so much. We can fly to the moon and unravel relativity theories and DNA codes, but the things we need to do now are a lot simpler than that. Helping people is often a complicated task, but everyone is needed to help, and all small skills add up to make a real difference, from carrying boxes of water to peeling carrots or creating art with newly orphaned children. THE THIRD WAVE volunteer has a humble but dynamic attitude, using common sense, love, and a whole lot of guts to get stuff done no matter how hard the obstacle. It’s about cutting through the red tape of bureaucracy to get help to the real people who need it, and it's about the human touch of giving love and hope to anyone who needs it. Governments and humanitarian organizations worldwide are experiencing enormous difficulties providing humanitarian assistance to large affected areas. Too often, by the time a recovery plan is in place, a bigger disaster drives international attention and the media into the next crisis, leaving many affected people behind with a cause considered no longer fashionable. The traditional disaster aid systems are broken, and we do not intend to point fingers at anyone but provide solutions for a more SUSTAINABLE future, including teaming with local grassroots groups already in place on the ground. The Third Wave teams work with many other great organizations and believe that we are stronger together than we are alone. We hope to inspire and motivate people to reach deep inside themselves to find their active role as volunteers. There is a hero in everyone.
