About This Cause
Fanm Saj, Inc is a 501 c3 non profit founded in 2018, “Fanm Saj" in the Haitian Creole Language means “Midwife” - in the literal term Fanm-means woman and Saj means gentleness. We know that Midwives catch babies and Fanm Saj, Inc as an organization exists to catch communities. With over 15 years of experience, under the leadership of Founder and Executive Director who is a first generation Haitian American - Black woman, Ruth Jeannoel. Her experience of living at the intersection of race, class and gender - discloses her values of supporting the leadership development of other Black and Brown communities. Her identities and lived experience of seeing how Criminalization has dehumanized her own family and community members continues to drive her passion in centering Black Liberation at the center of Transformative Justice. Based in Miami, FL, but provides support to organizations across the United States and internationally as well, Fanm Saj since its inception has been able to support the political, social and spiritual leadership of over 200 Black women. We envision a world where families of all ages and abilities have the power and support to live in safe and spiritually, mentally physically healthy communities. Fanm Saj mission is to provide families across the African Diaspora with cultural and wellness tools as well as social and political resources to nourish themselves, families and communities. The board of directors is currently made up of Black and queer identifying women as well. Fanm Saj has also established a Youth restorative justice advisory board whose membership is made up of 7 Black girl(s), 2 Black boy (s) and 1 Black gender non conforming youth. In Miami and South Florida, Fanm Saj has historically been leading the work by serving as an Organization that provides training, thought leadership and shared practice around Restorative Justice and Healing Justice. Fanm Saj is a Black, Women, Immigrant Led, and we have the audacity to practice healing in a world where White Supremacy tells us that we are not enough. At Fanm Saj, we recognize that in order for Black bodies to experience Healing, it must include Justice. For us, healing without justice is trash. We also know that there is more than one way to heal, and we curate healing experiences to give survivors a variety of holistic options as they begin to embark on their healing journey. Over the last couple of years, this program area has seen a 100% success rate of participants impacted by: Collective witnessing of healing and transformation that supports releasing lived and generational trauma; Re-imagining of well-being and relationships; Exploring the connection of health and happiness to personal, family and community and resiliency; Activities to explore mind-body-spirit tools and strategies rooted in diverse African and Indigenous cultures (e.g., heart-based conversations, spiritual baths, storytelling, nature-based rituals) to handle stress, conflict and trauma while also improving health and happiness. In order to see this success we utilize Restorative Justice Circle keeping as a transformative process, where families, communities and organizations can unlearn the norm of criminalization but instead, learn to get to the root of the problem instead. We see our organizations as one that is committed to helping foster leadership needed to fight Racial, Economic, and Gender Justice in our society. Specifically within that, we collaborate with Social Justice organizations who work on issue campaigns related to racial justice, civic engagement, immigration justice, and education justice sectors in order to embody our commitment.
