Mission Statement
Just Roots works in collaboration with communities to develop and expand access to local, sustainably grown food.
About This Cause
Just Roots envisions caring communities that motivate and support all residents to participate and access food in ways that promote and sustain the holistic health of people and the environment. Through our work, we strive to support local communities in three primary ways: 1) Improved holistic health and well-being for residents through the production, harvest, and consumption of healthy, culturally relevant food. 2) The development of a thriving community that learns and shares about local, healthy, regenerative food practices together. 3) Greater collaboration and resource sharing among urban farmers working to support and uplift residents in local communities. The programs and services we lead are guided by these three intended impacts. For example, in support of our first intended impact, we grow over forty different culturally relevant fruits, vegetables, and herbs, which are provided directly to residents through a variety of healthy food access programs. 50% of our food is sold on a sliding scale through our community supported agriculture (CSA) program, farm stand, and through partnerships with local schools and health clinics. The other 50% is donated to food pantries, mutual aid organizations, and senior and public housing facilities. Guided by our second intended impact, we utilize our farms as spaces for hands-on educational programming and community building. This includes offerings such as workshops, job training, health and wellness classes, and horticultural therapy. These programs are designed to equip participants with the skills and resources to grow their own food and integrate practices that support improved health and wellness. For example, our Fresh Food Farmacy program, led in collaboration with local health and food access providers, enables families to develop a deeper understanding of the connection between diet, nutrition, and health outcomes through direct access to healthy, culturally relevant food and hands-on educational programs. Finally, guided by our third intended impact, we work closely with neighboring farms, food businesses, and other organizations to support the development of a more local, regenerative, and community driven food system. We collaborate with neighboring organizations to aggregate and distribute fresh food, facilitate educational programming, host events, and build local food infrastructure. These efforts are laying the foundation for an equitable food system that can provide sustained access to food that nourishes our bodies, our communities, and the land.
