Mission Statement
The Bus for Outdoor Access & Teaching, or “BOAT,” strives to get more people outside on the most accessible outdoor program in America. A wilderness program on wheels run from a custom bus, we bring a full service outdoor program to the front door of any organization or school in the country. We partner with organizations to find ways for outdoor spaces to serve their unique mission or curricular goals, running logistics so educators can focus on teaching.
About This Cause
We connect front doors to the outdoors. Being outside is awesome - but getting outside can be tough. By turning a school bus into a fully equipped outdoor program on wheels, we make it easy to get groups outside. The Bus for Outdoor Access and Teaching, or "BOAT," can show up at your school, office, or front door, ready to go with a fully functional outdoor program. BOAT is working to solve for the major barriers we find keep organizations from getting outside - including economic, logistical, and cultural ones. BOAT is a school bus that can seat 32 passengers, and carries enough equipment to outfit them for a hike or backpacking trip. That means we can put a fully functional outdoor program and staff in any parking lot or street we go to. Our goal is for BOAT to be a wilderness-based program that can still be a presence in the community, while also being an affordable vehicle to outdoor spaces. BOAT runs three core types of programs. Our EXPEDITIONS help our partners get outside with fully staffed expeditions. Our EDUCATION PROGRAMS involve outdoor education right off the side at the bus, delivered in population dense areas like city parks, farmers markets, or festivals. Our TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM empowers organizations with planned outdoor activities have an affordable way to get their participants there. In 2019, we got 371 students into outdoor spaces and reached over 7,000 individuals through education programs in the state of Colorado.
