Mission Statement
To provide inexpensive, adjustable and modular below-knee prosthetics to developing countries at free of cost. Using 3-D printed sockets along with the 3 D printed feet, (patent pending) we can make low-cost prosthetics. Compared to the currently available commercial prosthetics which can cost anywhere from $8,000 to $40,000, our prosthetic costs under $40. By keeping the overall costs down, we can reach out to more amputees who require BKA prosthetics. We also want to provide our technology to high schools who are interested in community service, so that they can help us create prosthetics.
About This Cause
The Need Globally, there are over 30 million people with an amputation 47% of this population has a lower limb amputation Less than 20% have the needed mobility devices in developing countries such as Cambodia, Guatemala and India The main cause of the amputations: trauma from MVA, injuries, landmines, and lack proper and timely care 85% of people who suffer such an injury in Afghanistan, Angola, and Cambodia become casualties. The Cause Over 100 million landmines in the world exist It costs only $3 to plant landmines, but $1500 to remove one Even developed countries suffer from vascular diseases like diabetes There is currently a shortage of 40,000 trained prosthetists in the poorer countries (WHO) Even if people in underdeveloped countries have access to prosthetists, most cannot afford the prosthetic itself People who have access to prosthetists likely have to travel great distances The Solution The fitting of conventional prosthetics is time-consuming and labor-intensive. The turn-around for the prosthetic takes a very long time as well. With our methods, we can provide a prosthetic without physically being there, and only minimal measurements are required. Changes, such as ones in the residual limb like volume, shape, and composition, are all addressable when the socket is 3-D printed. A heat gun can move the socket inward and outward, and can also be reprinted if necessary, inexpensively.
