The mission of the Foster Care Advocacy Center is to provide holistic advocacy inside and outside the courtroom for children and parents involved in the child welfare system.
About This Cause
Foster Care Advocacy Center (FCAC) is the only nonprofit law office in Texas that employs a multidisciplinary model of representation where staff social workers and staff attorneys work together to provide holistic legal representation for children and parents involved with the child welfare system. We believe that every individual who touches the child welfare system deserves the highest quality representation and recognize that some children and families face more barriers than others. FCAC is the only nonprofit law office in Texas that employs a multidisciplinary model of representation where staff social workers and staff attorneys work together to provide holistic legal representation for children and parents involved with the child welfare system. Every other major city outside Texas uses this model, and it has proven to get children out of foster care more quickly, keep children more stable while in care, and place children home with parents or relatives more often than attorneys working alone. One of the primary functions of FCAC is to accept court appointments from Harris County Courts in complex CPS cases, involving individuals with mental illness, intellectual disabilities, or extensive medical needs. While the attorneys focus on the legal issues and utilize all litigation tools, the social services team works to investigate the appropriateness of placements and help individuals connect with community-based services because success in the courtroom alone is not all that children need to be safe and stable. The goals of our work are to provide quality legal services, reduce the time children spend in foster care, help individuals access services to stabilize families, prevent unnecessary removals of children, and advocate for systemic change.
