Mission Statement
The mission of Vouchers for Veterans to give support and show gratitude to all New Hampshire and Maine Veterans by providing them with vouchers at participating farmers markets for the purchase of locally grown food directly from the farmers and growers. The market brings combat Veterans back into the community where they meet other combat Veterans and have an opportunity to share their experiences and to understand they are not alone. The Veterans help each other discover programs and benefits to help in their healing process. The vouchers provides fresh food to the Veterans, creates additional revenue to the local farmers and grower and keeps the money in the community.
About This Cause
Vouchers for Veterans believe all military Veterans should be recognized and thanked for protecting our freedoms. There are many wonderful Veterans Programs in existence for Veterans yet most Veterans don't qualify. We want all Veterans to know and feel they are important and appreciated. We currently are operating out of 14 farmers markets. Any Veteran living in New Hampshire or Maine may go to any farmers market, we are offering vouchers and receive $20.00 in vouchers each week in September, November, December, January, February, March and April to purchase fresh, nutritious vegetables and meats. The vouchers redeemed by the farmers are given back to the Vouchers for Veterans representatives at the end of the day and in return the farmers receive a check for the face value of the vouchers. In 2024, we anticipate the program to be utilized approximately 8,000 times by 1,600 unique veterans seeking fresh food, information on veterans services, or simply a cathartic conversation with other veterans that understand what they have endured. When we operate our "Farm to Soldier" program during the month of September, it is because the local farmers and growers have an abundance of crops yet sales have slumped due to tourists returning home after summer vacation and children returning to school. The vouchers used by the veterans keep the market vibrant and sales soar as some farmers and growers double their regular income during the month of September. We added the Winter Farmers markets when we started receiving calls that due to the rising prices of electricity, heating oil and other household expenses, many Veterans were hungry and struggling to provide their families with food. Our inside Winter farmers markets were an immediate success. They were well stocked with fresh veggies, meats, fish and fresh prepared foods. We are currently providing fresh food to NH and Maine Veterans 28 weeks a year. We are a volunteer driven organization with the exception of 1 part time accountant (20 hrs) for record-keeping. We strive to see that every veteran feels recognized and appreciated for all they sacrificed for our freedom. I feel, We, as a nation, can never do enough.
