Mission Statement

Cristo Rey St. Viator College Preparatory is a Catholic learning community that educates young people of limited economic means to become men and women of faith, purpose and service. Through a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, integrated with a relevant work study experience, students graduate ready to succeed in college and in life.

About This Cause

The Cristo Rey Network comprises 37 Catholic, college preparatory schools that today serve 13,000 students across 24 states. Cristo Rey schools offer a high-quality secondary education to young people of limited economic means. The school's distinctive integration of a rigorous college preparatory academic curriculum with a four-year Corporate Work Study Program will provide an educational environment that equips students to excel in their undergraduate and post-graduate lives. The Corporate Work Study Program (a separately incorporated entity) operates like a temporary employment agency within Cristo Rey St Viator and employs every student five full days a month in an entry-level, professional job all four years of high school. Students earn a majority of their education cost while gaining real-world work experience that strengthens their cognitive and non-cognitive skill development, catalyzes confidence and aspiration, and prepares them for success in college and careers. In Southern Nevada, Cristo Rey St. Viator College Preparatory High School opened its campus in North Las Vegas on North Las Vegas Boulevard and Pecos on August 12, 2019, with school beginning on September 3, 2019. Cristo Rey St Viator currently has 95 students enrolled in its initial freshman class and will add an additional class of 125 students each year for the next three years until fully enrolled with 500 students. All students complete three weeks of work force development training during the summer to ensure students are prepared to excel in a corporate work environment. Cristo Rey graduates are enrolling in college at (90%) a rate 1.4x greater than low-income high school graduates (61%) and more than high school graduates from high-income families (86%). In addition, Cristo Rey graduates are three times more likely to complete a bachelor's degree by age 24, compared to the total U.S. low-income population. While the aspirational goal is that 70% of Cristo Rey graduates complete four-year degrees, Cristo Rey students are making strong progress towards earning college degrees at the rate of 58% which is comparable to students from families in the highest income quartile. On average, Cristo Rey students arrive in ninth grade two grade levels behind academically because, through no fault of their own, they have not had the benefit of access to quality instruction in grades K-8. To ensure Cristo Rey students graduate from high school prepared for college, our schools must routinely target six years of learning gains during four years of high school. Cristo Rey schools utilize a proprietary, standards based, college preparatory curriculum—aligned to the Common Core State Standards, the ACT College and Career Readiness Standards, and the SAT—that emphasizes lifelong learning behaviors and critical thinking skills to ensure appropriate rigor and empower student success.
