Mission Statement
Ariana House provides a welcoming home for refugee families and asylum-seekers along with the education, social connections, and the support they need to flourish in our community
About This Cause
First and foremost Ariana House is a safe home. We live together with families who have fled tragic and violent situations and are here now to start new lives. We share in each other's joys and struggles. On most Saturdays, we gather to eat, dance, and play games. Current and former Ariana House residents and our volunteers come and we celebrate birthdays, milestones, and we mourn deaths together. At Ariana House, we journey together to encourage each other to thrive. We founded Ariana House in 2015 to provide a welcome home for refugees who were being resettled in Salem, Oregon. In 2018, we became aware of the need for housing and services for families who had come to Oregon seeking asylum and we shifted our focus to serving these families. That same year we became a faith-based 501c3. My husband and I live at Ariana House. Our 1.25 acre property includes a large converted church, a three bedroom/ two bathroom home, a one bedroom 5th Wheel, a prayer sanctuary and a 24 ft yurt for retreats. We are able to provide transitional housing for up to 5 families. We are currently housing 4 families and a single person. Families are invited to live at Ariana House for up to one year. In addition to free housing, we provide the following assistance to families: School enrollment for children ESL enrollment for parents Registration for benefits for which families may be eligible Establishment of medical care Accompaniment to immigration appointments Connection to community resources Donations of personal hygiene kits, smartphones, and a one-time gift card Under the supervision of an Immigration Attorney, assistance to apply for various forms of immigration benefits and relief. We work with a small team of volunteers to provide these services. Ariana House is closely partnered with Salem For Refugees for referrals. We also have an ongoing partnership with Baraka Ministries at Salem Alliance Church. With Baraka, we lead our International Prayer Gathering and share pastoral responsibilities for refugee and immigrant families in the Salem area. Every Sunday, we worship and pray with people from dozens of nations and languages. Finally, Ariana House manages the Uhuru Choir; a group of youth and adults who now live in Salem and arrived here as refugees or as asylum seekers. Since 2015, Ariana House has housed and served 23 families comprised of 109 people total. Our guests have come from the following countries: Burundi, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Guinea-Conakry, Iran, Iraq, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Namibia, the Republic of Congo, Somalia, Somaliliand, and Venezuela. We have also assisted 6 families consisting of 22 individuals from Colombia, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, and Nicaragua.
