Mission Statement
Our structured, incentive-based programs lay the foundation for children to be accountable for their actions, especially when it comes to academics, nutrition, physical fitness and personal conduct. We believe that for Urban Initiatives to have a significant influence on the lives of children, we must strive to provide opportunities for success, starting young and serving the whole child.
About This Cause
Chicago natives Jim Dower and Dan Isherwood founded Urban Initiatives in 2003 in Cabrini-Green. As CPS teachers and suburban soccer coaches, they started UI as a response to the lack of extracurricular programs for the children at Byrd Academy. The UI way allowed kids to learn, practice, and experience success. It became evident early on that this approach translated to the classroom. The principal and teachers at Byrd saw the positive impact in and around school. As word of their success spread, the demand for UI grew across CPS. Our mission is to empower Chicago’s underserved children to adopt healthy lifestyles, improve their academic performance, and build strong character through sports-based youth development programs. We maximize our impact by collaborating with parents, schools, and community stakeholders.
