Mission Statement
Heroes for Children advocates for and provides financial and social assistance to families with children (0-22 yrs of age) battling cancer.
About This Cause
Founded by two remarkable mothers who understood the unique needs of families with children fighting cancer, Heroes for Children has grown from an idea over a kitchen table to a statewide organization that has helped thousands of children fighting cancer and their families. As we reflect on the past 10 years, we are moved and inspired by what we - with the invaluable support of our volunteers and donors - have been able to accomplish. For 10 years, Heroes for Children has helped alleviate families' worries, giving them comfort and a brief respite from the everyday challenges of cancer-fighting and caregiving. Since 2004, Heroes for Children has provided: More than $4 million directly to 4,200 families in need through our financial assistance grants. These grants provide much-needed support to families struggling with the high cost of cancer treatment. Our average financial assistance grant is $750. Whether this money goes toward a mortgage payment or travel expenses to and from the hospital, it relieves some of the pressure families feel while caring for a sick child and trying to make ends meet. Moments of normalcy and respite to 1,600 families through our social assistance programs. Heroes for Children gives families the opportunity to relax, to celebrate, to laugh. By forgetting their troubles, even if only for an hour or two, families have a chance to restore their emotional resources. Sponsorship of Beads of Courage in seven hospitals across Texas. Beads of Courage is a resilience-based intervention program designed to support and strengthen families coping with serious illness. The program helps children develop positive coping strategies and restores sense of self. "Since Heroes for Children first started, we have stayed true to our mission of advocating for and providing financial and social assistance to families with children battling cancer. By managing our funds appropriately, we are poised to ensure our vision that no family with a child battling cancer is alone. The incidence of childhood cancer doesn't seem to be slowing down, but neither are we," said Randal Locke, advisory board member and first chairman of the Board of Directors of Heroes for Children.
