Mission Statement

Matheatre / History Science Theatre uses live musical theatre to inspire excitement about math and science.

About This Cause

Matheatre / History Science Theatre is one of the world's only theatre companies dedicated to the stories of scientists and the science behind their discoveries. At the 2006 Minnesota Fringe Festival, Sadie Bowman and Marc Gutman premiered a highly unlikely smash hit: Calculus: The Musical! It was the product of a funny math teacher and a smart comedian, and it struck a resounding chord in the education world. Then in 2016, Bowman and Gutman rebooted the company with actor/writer/one-time-astrophysics-major Ricky Coates, and the new creative team of Bowman and Coates started creating all new musicals across the scientific spectrum . Now a 501(c)(3) entity serving over 18,000 audience members annually, Matheatre's productions have been seen in science centers, libraries, planetaria, high schools, and colleges in five countries and over 30 states, including the National Taiwan Science Education Center, Science Centre Singapore, Lowell Observatory, The National Atomic Testing Museum (part of the Smithsonian Institution), and Los Alamos National Laboratory/Bradbury Science Museum. With a catalogue of stage musicals and interactive works of theatre, Matheatre works to find compelling ways to connect audiences with scientific material.
