Mission Statement
Inspiring Minds is a nonprofit organization that provides after-school and summer programming for students in the Greater Philadelphia Region. Our mission is to engage, inspire and empower youth through education and exposure to new experiences within a safe, positive environment; one that strengthens confidence and character. Our vision is to see every student graduate high school, complete college or a vocational school and become strong, successful members of our society. Additionally, we seek to inspire youth to discover their passions and equip them with the tools needed to pursue them.
About This Cause
Inspiring Minds provides free year-round programming through two distinct components: the After-School Component and the Summer Enrichment Component (SEP). The IM After-School Component helps to improve classroom performance and increase student readiness for college and vocations by taking advantage of what might otherwise be unsupervised time, weekdays between 3 to 6 p.m. Our 6-week Summer Enrichment Program offers a combination of academics, athletics, nutrition, cultural, and other fun activities focused on decreasing summer learning loss from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday for K-8 grade. Inspiring Minds Greater Philadelphia has students participate in After-School and Summer Programming focusing on 5 areas of impact: Education; College & Career Readiness; Exposure to New Experiences; Health & Wellness; and Personal Development. • Education – IM provides one-on-one educational support that helps to improve grades, provides positive mentorship and offers an expressive outlet for youth. Students will receive assistance with homework and special tutoring in subjects in which they are struggling. Curricula components include S.T.E.A.M., entrepreneurship, professional development, and financial literacy. IM collects all student interim grades, report cards, and testing scores as a means of monitoring student progress, and mentors and tutors intervene if problems arise. These reports allow the program to acknowledge student successes with awards and incentives for various stages of achievement. • College & Career Readiness – IM provides guidance to students as they embark on the search for a future career and related postsecondary education and training. Students are encouraged to identify careers that fit their talents and interests before researching colleges, universities and technical training. To support this, IM arranges tours for the students to visit education and training institutions (monthly visits during the school year and weekly during the summer.) IM also will aim to increase FAFSA completion rates and provide more assistance with scholarship applications to minimize the amount of debt students must assume to complete a college education. Finally, IM works with students to create resumes and conduct mock interviews to help prepare them for job/internship searches and opportunities. • Exposure to New Experiences – IM helps students to see how their dreams can take them anywhere. IM coordinates trips that provide new, eye-opening experiences exposing students to experiences they would not otherwise have. We create opportunities to learn more about culture and the arts, like visiting the MLK monument in Washington DC and the Blacks in Wax museum in Baltimore. Students have participated in diversity conferences with students from private schools and have been invited to symposiums throughout the city. • Health & Wellness – IM promotes healthy living through diet, exercise, and personal hygiene. IM believes it is not enough to simply feed students, but to teach them how to be self-sufficient and educated about nutrition, health, and physical activity. Students are introduced to healthy food options and healthy living, including where healthy food comes from. IM also stresses the importance of mental wellness and brings in practices of mindfulness and yoga. • Personal Development – IM focuses on self-reflection and identity awareness. Our belief is that you must know who you are as you navigate your way through the world. We value integrity and center authenticity, honesty and transparency in everything we do. We facilitate monthly workshops for our students to dig deeper into who they are and who they want to become knowing that this work is a lifelong process. Inspiring Minds Greater Philadelphia believes in the youth in our city are brilliant, capable, and game-changers. We will work with like-minded organizations to invest in our children and community.
