Mission Statement
Leadership Brainery is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization closing opportunity and wealth gaps by increasing the number of underrepresented candidates accepted and enrolled in postgraduate programs and recruited for high-impact careers. We envision a day when competitive graduate and professional school classrooms throughout the country are enriched by an equitable representation of first-generation and diverse students, empowered to transform leadership in our country’s workforce.
About This Cause
Our theory of change is that with greater resources and access to inclusive networks and advanced education, BIPOC communities can leverage high-wage careers to establish financial stability and reinvest in their communities to create generational prosperity, thus closing wealth and opportunity gaps. LB works directly with diverse talent, academic institutions, and employers to eradicate inequities. Through transformative vs. transactional leadership development, graduate school test preparation, admissions and financial aid coaching, and career mentoring, LB increases the pool of prepared diverse postgraduate candidates. In turn, LB generates more inclusive perspectives in our country's workforce leadership -- leading to more equitable systemic change and investment back into BIPOC and low-income communities. We currently have two programs, which are the 1) Leadership Brainery Ambassador Program and 2) LB Connect. LEADERSHIP BRAINERY AMBASSADOR PROGRAM The LB Ambassador Program is an intensive three-year cohort-based pipeline program that equips extraordinary first-generation and diverse college student leaders with the skills and resources to prepare for postgraduate education, build inclusive networks, and gain access to impactful and high-wage careers. We select students in their sophomore year of college who stay in the program for three years until graduation, to ensure they meet the necessary requirements and take the proper prerequisites courses to remain on track for postgraduate enrollment. The application process includes a personal statement, video submission, an individual interview, and a group interview. Through the generous support of our donors and partners, we offer the LBA program tuition-free. LB Ambassador Program components include: *Monthly Office Hours Ambassadors have access to office hours the first Friday of each month with LB Staff. Focus includes support & advisement with the following: school/life balance; motivation strategies; undergraduate demands; community engagement & internships; and goal setting & execution. *8 ASSEMBLE Meetings (1 every Fall, Spring, Summer) Ambassadors attend eight virtual A.S.S.E.M.B.L.E meetings focusing on inspiring (A)mbassadors who, (S)upport one another, (S)erve their communities, (E)xcel academically, (M)obilize their peers, (B)uild meaningful relationships, (L)ead courageously, & (E)mpower the world. The A.S.S.E.M.B.L.E. meetings integrate the following core competencies: Character, Conscience, Connections, Confidence, Community, Charisma, Commitment, & Creativity. *3 Impact Summits (1 each year) Ambassadors will learn from inspirational speakers about their leadership & professional journeys; engage with recruiters from top postgraduate programs about the admission process; and network with peers. *1:1 Coaching & Postgraduate Test Preparation Through a partnership with Ivy Grad Services, LB Ambassadors receive a personal admissions coach who: answers all admissions-related questions; helps create a study plan; edits & revises personal, diversity, & addendum statements; provides financial aid & negotiation tips; and connects students with alumni from their schools of interest. Ambassadors also receive online access to Magoosh Test Prep to prepare for postgraduate entrance exams. LB CONNECT LB Connect is our beta-stage online platform connecting extraordinary diverse and first-generation college student leaders, postgraduate recruiters, mentors, and employers from around the nation. The web-based platform provides access to exclusive groups, professional resources and tools, and talent sourcing opportunities. At the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak, we knew our in-person engagement needed to shift to virtual. We developed a platform to bring all our stakeholders together and to form a community for diverse students to access opportunities and engage in a time where isolation continues to be more prevalent than usual.
